There’s a generic spread of food on a table off to one side of the room: donuts, muffins, bagels, and cookies; coffee, lemonade, water, and because one of the Different asked for it, hot chocolate. Maybe you’re hungry enough to try it—it’s free after all.

Or maybe you can’t stomach anything, given the event you’re attending.

The space is a local rec center. The beige-painted cinder block walls and the fluorescent lighting are a terrible combination. Maybe they are reminiscent of the public school you attended in your youth?

Why are you here? Curiosity? Maybe the Bureau official will say something that will help you make sense of things? The meeting was interesting—who knew there were so many people like you, receiving memories of a past life? The group was led by someone from The Bureau—the Department of Medical Services. Some people are staying in their chairs and chatting—they must know each other from previous meetings. Some of them are gravitating towards the food.

How do you feel about tonight? Has it helped you come to terms with the dream of memories you’re having? Maybe it’s time to talk to others, get an understanding of their experience.

He's there too, reluctantly, arms folded, brooding. He hates it still. The piss poor excuse for food, the people milling about and looking uncomfortable-- or else sitting on the edge of the proceedings and just watching. He understood the latter, but it didn't really help get things going.

After a moment he realized he'd been giving the man across the room a steady look for ten minutes and was suddenly unsure what to do. It would seem like he was guilty of something if he looked away, but he didn't want the attention of staring at him either. Maybe he could just casually glance aside?

Bail noticed the man across the circle staring at him, but at first paid him no mind. He was focused on the Bureau official there tonight and in listening to the other attendees. It was useful if you knew what to listen and look for, which Bail, having extensive experience with group therapy, did.

But the man continued to stare. Bail wondered if it was because he looked like his brother who was a state politician. It didn't happen often - usually people didn't know that states had politicians. But it happened, on the rare occasion.

He kept a watch on the man, and it was clear after a while the man really wasn't staring at him... Bail just happened to be in the direction the man was staring. Which made Bail a lot more comfortable about the whole thing. And from that point forward, it was easy to graciously leave the man staring in peace. Bail didn't see a need to bring attention to what was going on.

Actually now Alec was staring in earnest. There was something about him familiar somehow. Not exactly, but Alec felt as if he'd seen someone who looked somewhat like him before. On the news, maybe? At a school board meeting? It reminded him of something official and annoying that put a sour feeling in his stomach.

But then he remembers-- It fits into place-- and if he's right--

Without much preamble he gets up, hand in his pocket, the other clutching his shitty coffee, and approaches the man.

"You related to Riley Organa?" Blunt, he knows, but if he's right then things are just a jot more concerning. If this man is a Different, and Alec is pretty sure he is, then there's a chance that Senator Organa might become one too-- What that means, Alec doesn't know. Nothing good. He doesn't know too much about Riley Organa except he was pro-funding public schools. Not that schools got funded, because you'd have an easier time finding a needle in a haystack then convincing anyone in the fucking government to raise money for the benefit of the people they supposedly served. Especially in urban schools.

Nevertheless he appreciated the man for trying, and would hate to see anything happen to him.

Bail was a bit surprised that the man who'd been staring in his direction decided to come over- not to introduce himself, it turned out.

"I am," Bail confirmed, because he was an honest person. But he was skeptical about the man's intentions. "Why do you ask?"

"Because this? This runs in families. Or seems to. My cousin and I. A mother and child. Lord knows who else." He shook his head. "I don't like it. I don't like what they're doing. I don't like what it means. I don't like how high up it's going."

He squinted a bit at the man. "What do you know of the Bureau?"

Bail raised an eyebrow at the man's comment about how high up this was going.

"I know only what I've heard in these meetings," he said cautiously. "Just how high does it go?"

"Don't know..." He sat nearby, absently loosening his collar. "Think it might be government, or they claim to be, but can't say for sure. I don't like it. Not a damn bit."

"Well," Bail said. "My brother is not involved in this. I had never heard of the Bureau before - well, before that memory. I tried a basic search online, but I haven't found anything- not even a conspiracy theorist's blog entry. Have you found anything out about them?"
scotch_egg: (wot)

[personal profile] scotch_egg 2020-05-23 01:27 am (UTC)(link)
"Not a bloody thing." He scowled at nothing. "I don't like it. It feels too secretive. Too sci fi. Like the aliens at Roswell. It doesn't make sense. Why would they be doing this? What are they getting from brainwashing everyone to believe these memories? Why us? Why now?" He shook his head.

"I just can't wrap my head around it."

"I wasn't going to say it in font of present company..." Bail shrugged, and glanced pointedly at the Bureau official there tonight. But it did feel like science fiction.

"So," Bail said casually, not wanting to draw unwanted attention. The Bureau official was talking to a few other Different so they were fine for the moment.

"You think these aren't actual memories, but... false thoughts implanted in our minds?"

He nodded, taking the hint.

"I think so. What else could they be?" And then. "Do you want to go get a coffee?"

It was a good way to talk and be unobserved.
