The sound of Jack's voice over the din in the city first caused John to turn in immediate acknowledgement, and then he did quickly as he was told. He ducked just in time to dodge the rock that Jack had thrown at an unseen assailant, then turned as they all stumbled and fell over. He laughed, a sharp, wily sound, and hopped the low fence over to where his friend was. He reached out and gripped Jack's forearms fondly, almost an embrace.

"Turtles! You're so right! They look like something out of Star Wars, eh? Swear that's what they remind me of." He chuckled a little, and reached down to take Jack's hand. "We should probably get out of here before they try to get up or figure out that they can shoot from the ground. Do you have any idea what's going on? I mean! Two blocks from here, half of Central Park is a snow field, and the Empire State Building doesn't exist anymore! And - and there's no people other than the Different that I've seen! The streets are abandoned!"

Jack is quietly stunned how good John's hand feels in his and for a second he doesn't realize that John has asked him a question. Once his brain catches up with things. He answers as he looks around. "The City has these weird shifts sometimes," he explains remembering that he's been in the city and dealing with this longer than John. "Last time it happened before the sherbert thing, a whole alien world showed up. I got stuck in a temple with some of the other Different and we ended up going on this adventure. This looks to be another one of these shifts."

John had always been a tactile sort of person - perhaps it was the lack of physical affection he'd gotten in his youth that made him yearn for it now, but he was deeply pleased when Jack did not pull his hand away. It was a familiar touch - not just because he knew Jack, and because they'd had a few cups of coffee and maybe a meal or two together since they met. It went deeper than that - though he couldn't rightly describe why. He ached to know the truth of it all - as if there was something exciting and perhaps just a bit sad that he was missing out on, on the other side.

He ducked into the stairs leading down into a subway station, hands still clasped, and leaned against the wall. He didn't dare let go; in fact, he squeezed a bit tighter and turned his head - towards Jack, and also towards the sound of the oncoming robots overhead.

"The sherbet thing was mundane compared to this - a whole alien world??"

John looked at Jack, for all the world, as if Christmas had come early. Astrophysicists fell generally into two camps - one that believed that there were far too many worlds out in the universe for there not to be intelligent life, and one that believed in a bottleneck theory - that we were alone, unique in all of the cosmos. Neither had yet to be proven - but John was the one who believed in life. Deep in his heart, he knew that life had to survive, thrive, out in such a grand place. He'd already been through the portal to another world, but that the city had seen an alien planet with the naked eye? How had he missed such a thing?

"Oh...if this is the first of many adventures with you, I think I'll be right as rain," he enthused. "Another world! Brilliant - I have always - I've always thought that there had to be life out there, and - well, okay, I'm not all that fond of being shot at with blasters right out of a science fiction film, but...Feels familiar, doesn't it?" He laughed a little, a bit breathless. "Just like when we met - familiar. Like we've done something like this before, eh? Running, jumping, dodging robot aliens..."

Jack finds himself body blocking John like it's the most important thing in the world for him to do. Protecting John feels right though he has no idea why. "The sherbert thing was annoying more than anything, a tiny shift compared to this" He shakes his head, unable to suppress a chuckle. "But you're right...this does feel familiar. Like I've done it a million times and yet it doesn't feel boring." Compared to most of the Different Jack has never hesitated when things like this happen. He yearns to explore and understand instead of hide. But before, he'd felt alone in his need to explore, now he had John and it felt like a part of himself had slotted into place. "It feels...right," he says, "like things are the way they should be...in an odd sort of way, because I don't know why I feel this way."

Funnily enough, John felt the thrill of the moment - that it was sweet of Jack to try and protect him, but it was wholly unnecessary. It was a ridiculous feeling - he was only human, after all.

(Wasn't he?)

Suddenly, for some reason, the title of "only human" seemed to fit poorly, like a t-shirt that had once fit you, but was ill-fitted and worn out now. It wasn't the sensation of the other man pressing against him - though that felt oddly familiar as well, and not because they'd been on a few coffee/dinner/lunch outings. Dates? Were they? There had been some flirting, perhaps, but it was hard to -

John was getting distracted. He glanced up over Jack's shoulder, and felt as though he needed something in his hand, a tool, something to help them in this situation - but all he had was salvaged junk.

"Funny, innit? Feel as though we've done it on a million worlds, in a million places - but that's mad, isn't it? Unless it's true, that we know one another On The Other Side." He laughed a bit, his dark eyes brightening with that delighted, maddened gleam. His mind went back to Rose Tyler, their one shared commonality, and the mutual pang of sadness. He didn't have but that one Memory - and he had poured over it daily since it had happened, wondering and waiting for the next one to come.

"...I don't know why this seems important," he breathed, listening to the sound of blaster fire in the streets overhead. He turned his head slightly, catching Jack's eyes in their close proximity. "...Don't think I ever mentioned this. But...in my Memory, I called myself The Doctor - does that..." His eyes flickered down to lips, then back up to the eyes, taking in the whole of his face. Yes, yes, this seemed familiar too, but in a far more quiet setting. His heart raced - and that oddly felt a bit off as well - as if it didn't quite feel enough. John's breathing came in breathless, shallow sounds. "...That sound familiar at all...oh!"

[Halt! Stay where you are!]

The robotic, tinny voices of the battle droids echoed in the subway stairwell - they'd been caught. Having never let go of Jack's hand, he pulled him close.

"Run!"

Jack had been calling their outings dates in his head since he'd finally admitted to himself that he had a crush on John. Crush seemed too light to call what he was feeling, but now was not the time to think about things like that. The name "Doctor" settles on Jack and again it feels right. I wish I'd never met you Doctor...I was better off a coward," Another connection between them. "I call the man in my Memory that," he says, his voice taking on a horse note. "Just Doctor....no other name." But before Jack can say more the droids find them and John is holding his hand and telling him to run so Jack does without thinking more about how good it all feels.
