There’s a generic spread of food on a table off to one side of the room: donuts, muffins, bagels, and cookies; coffee, lemonade, water, and because one of the Different asked for it, hot chocolate. Maybe you’re hungry enough to try it—it’s free after all.

Or maybe you can’t stomach anything, given the event you’re attending.

The space is a local rec center. The beige-painted cinder block walls and the fluorescent lighting are a terrible combination. Maybe they are reminiscent of the public school you attended in your youth?

Why are you here? Curiosity? Maybe the Bureau official will say something that will help you make sense of things? The meeting was interesting—who knew there were so many people like you, receiving memories of a past life? The group was led by someone from The Bureau—the Department of Medical Services. Some people are staying in their chairs and chatting—they must know each other from previous meetings. Some of them are gravitating towards the food.

How do you feel about tonight? Has it helped you come to terms with the dream of memories you’re having? Maybe it’s time to talk to others, get an understanding of their experience.

She'd talked last month about wanting to come back to these, that maybe it would be important to attend the Bureau's meetings even if they were going to do something else - or even if they didn't think for a moment the Bureau wasn't listening - but Lisa had still been surprised to find her feet bringing her here. She'd at least planned ahead this time, bringing her own drink in a Chick-fil-a cup, but here she was all the same.

Surveying the room after some time, she heard the muttering and turned to see where it'd come from. This guy... looked kinda familiar... well, that doesn't really matter here. Whoever you were, you were more than that now. She'd managed to convince herself of that, at least, and that brought her to step closer with a smile and a small wave. "Work's important, but knowing what's going on is kinda important too, yeah?" she said, by way of both greeting and mild challenge. "Welcome, welcome. Willing to give us a few minutes? I can try and give you the short version."

Jack flashes her a quick smile. "I understand the concept of what we are," he says, "but the idea that I lived another life...one where I might have been in love with two people at the same time is a little weird for me. It felt so....normal. Like kissing them was something I did every day. Not only that but....one of them seems to have the same name as my sister.....that's also very weird." Jack sighed and shook his head. "I just...I thought I knew who I was and now I don't. Do all the people like us feel like this?"

Lisa fights the urge to sputter; that is concerning enough to be properly worried about, yes. Instead she laughs softly. "Okay, fair, that's quite a bit to take in. The sister thing may or may not be coincidence, at least?" Her expression shifts a bit, as she frowns slightly. "And yes, as far as I can tell, we all feel like that. I know I do," she adds a bit darkly. Then she shakes her head and brightens, only forcing it a little. "But I'm trying to see it as a good thing, yeah? I can try to be more me than I was before or something." She pauses; then adds, "And I kinda just want to know, I guess."

Jack manages a warmer smile and a nod. "I suppose," he says, "I do love my sister just not like that." He shakes his head. "I just feel so torn....I want to go find those people but I'm scared that my memory might be wrong or worse they might not exist at all." He took a deep breath. "I've been fighting loneliness for so long and for a second when I saw them I felt both happy and sad at the same time."

"Your sister sounds like a good person, for you to worry like that," Lisa allows softly, before shaking her head. "And I know the feeling. I want to figure out what I saw, and I'd love to meet those people if I could. I've got a bit of work ahead of me, but it's worth a shot, right?"

She hesitates for a second, then adds, "We'll have to see what we can find. Maybe it'll be better if you end up with more information, but. It's worth a shot," she repeats.

Jack smiles again and nods. "I would be happy to help you too if I can," he says, "I started in the lower end of the theater world and would be able to ask them to poke around if you needed anything. If we can't depend on each other then who can we depend on."

"Theater, huh..." Is that where she'd seen him? Well, either way, it's reassuring to hear. "Well, thank you. I think I need to figure out a little more before I start trying to get some research in, but I'll keep it in mind. I'm not sure I have those kinds of connections though, ahaha..." She shakes her head. "I don't think I'd be here if I did," Lisa adds after a second.

Jack glances at the Bureau types and then back at his companion. "Where would you'd rather like to be?"

"Nashville," Lisa answers easily and a bit wistfully. "A record studio, a real stage, a radio booth. Clearly either my connections weren't good enough, or I wasn't good enough. Maybe both." She chuckles a bit darkly, shaking her head again, a bit of Southern drawl creeping into her tone. "But I wasn't country enough, so I figured it was time to either try somethin' new, or get good. This's two birds with one stone."

"I know New York isn't Nashville or anything," Jack says carefully, "but I have contacts in the industry here and I wouldn't be apposed to helping you." Jack smiles, "I like to help you young singers get started since I myself came up from a farm and struggled along before I got my break."

Lisa's eyebrows go up into her bangs. He'd just met her less than five minutes ago, and he's talking about pulling strings? This guy is scary. Nice, supportive, but scary. And so while part of her wants to take the offer-

"I appreciate it, but with everything going on with, well-" she gestures around her at the meeting- "I should probably wait a bit before I depend on your goodwill, yeah? I don't wanna go for it and then something stupid happens with all this. I'll keep that in mind, though - that's a big deal and I'd be stupid not to take you up on it once things are stable." She smiles at him, taking a breath. "That's quite a rise, though. Rags to riches, huh?"
